How to Wear Rust in the Summer

Rust is often thought of as a fall color, but it can absolutely work for summer when styled the right way. The key is to lighten everything around it.

In the fall, rust is paired with deeper, richer tones. But in the summer, we want to create a softer, more relaxed look using lighter colors and breathable fabrics. Think of rust as your base, and then build a lighter palette around it. Rust and Turquoise

If you want something a little more unexpected for summer, try pairing rust with turquoise. This combination reminds me of a desert sunset: the warm, earthy tones of rust with the bright, vibrant pop of turquoise. It’s a little bolder than the other pairings, but still incredibly wearable.

One of the easiest ways to pair turquoise with rust look is through accessories, such as:

A statement necklace
Earrings or stacked bracelets

These small touches add just enough contrast without overwhelming the outfit. If you want to take it a step further, you could incorporate turquoise in a printed top or even a subtle shoe or bag, but start small if you’re not used to wearing brighter colors.

Just like in the fall, white is one of the easiest colors to wear with rust. But for summer, softer whites and ivory feel more relaxed and effortless. This combination looks clean, fresh, and perfect for warm weather.

Instead of deep indigo or navy, switch to a lighter denim shade. This instantly makes the outfit feel more casual and summery while still giving you that same classic pairing. A chambray shirt with rust pants is an easy, go-to combination. I chose this shade because it perfectly matches one of the colors in my belt.

Pink and Rust

Pink works for winter. and it works beautifully for summer too. Look for lighter fabrics like cotton or linen blends to keep the look soft and breathable. This combination feels feminine without being overly sweet.

Butter Yellow

Mustard is perfect for fall, but for summer, swap it for a softer butter yellow. This gives you the same warm, tonal look, but feels much lighter and more seasonal. It’s one of the easiest ways to update your rust pieces for warmer weather.

This is almost a monochromatic look, if you can find the right shade of peach/coral. It’s a very intentional look, and adds a summer feel to these shades.

You can go with a lighter green (such as a sage or even aqua), but with olive being so on trend this season, I thought it was a great, modern look.

How to Wear Rust in the Fall

Updated September 2025 (and will be updated again this fall)! When pumpkin spice season rolls around, who isn’t thinking of soft sweaters, boots and all things cozy. A big part of that is wearing the color of the season: rust. You may think that it’s a hard color to match but let me show you the best colors to wear with rust. They may not be colors that you would intuitively think of, but I love all these combinations. I’ve included some shopping options in each color for you to consider too.

Best Colors to Wear with Rust: Ivory/White

The easiest color to wear with rust if of course, ivory or white. You know that it matches and it’s an easy color to find and it looks really cozy paired with rust. This one is the safe yet still chic way to go.

On the flip side, we’re going to stay away from black. While it does match and looks great, the look can be a little “Halloween-y”. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear it, just be aware of how it might look.

Denim/Navy

This is one of my favorite looks for how to wear rust. It gives the color a nice “country feel” when paired with denim. After putting this outfit together, I am now looking for a country-style belt that I think would really round out this look. A solid navy top works just as well as the denim look.

Blush Pink

Rust and pink might not be the first combination you think of, but again, it’s one that I really like. I am a big fan of orange and hot pink for summer, so this is really a more subdued version of that. It’s subtle and a nice feminine look to pair with rust.

Best Colors to Wear With Rust: Teal

Teal is similar to wearing navy with rust but with a little more green (we’ll talk earth tones in just a little bit). I love the contrast with this look and gives it more of a southwest feel. This is another color combination that would work well with a country theme.

Mustard

I consider rust an earth tone, so I think that pairing it with another earth tone is a great idea. This look is pure fall to me. Pair it with a cute plaid jacket and you’ve got the perfect pumpkin patch outfit.

Olive Green

Another earth tone, similar to teal, but with more warm tones for an earthy feel. It’s another look that screams fall and perfect for this time of year.
