When you hear the phrase “How to Wear Four Fashion Trends Over 50”, people may think that “wearing trends” and “over 50” don’t go together. But they definitely do and I am here to show you not only HOW, but WHY adopting new trends into your wardrobe over 50 is key to creating a joyful wardrobe. What’s a joyful wardrobe? It’s one that you look forward to wearing everytime you enter your closet! No dread here!
I wanted to do this segment because, as an over 50 woman myself, I often hear the phrase “I’m too old to wear that” or “trends are for the young” from my friends and clients. What I think is key here is to stop thinking about “if” you should wear something and focus more on “how”. Are there some trends that feel like they are geared more towards younger women? Of course. But that doesn’t mean that with a few tweaks to make it suit your own style, it can be a home run look for you.
Why did I pick these trends specifically? It’s because I think they are fun, to start, but also because I think that they might be ones that women over 50 would say “I can’t wear that” before even trying it! My mission is to show you HOW to wear something that you may not think you can, just because it seems trendy!

How To Wear Four Fashion Trends Over 50: Sporty Trend
Model: Lori
Why Sporty: Sporty/preppy looks will continue into 2025. A lot of its popularity was generated last year by both the Olympics and tennis style trends, but in 2025 the look will include looks that combine all sports and even more preppy academic looks. Think rugby shirts, bomber/varsity jackets and plaid skirts. Many of these styles will overlap with the upcoming stripes trend (see below) as the “sailor theme” will take on some of these same elements.
Lori’s Look: The bomber jacket is already starting to be seen everywhere for spring. I picked this olive green as it’s a great transitional color from winter to spring. It’s a “wear it now and wear it later” piece. Because Lori is tall, we paired her jacket with a pair of high waisted wide leg cuffed jeans. We paired her jeans with a bootie for now but we can easily swap it out for a sandal or heeled loafer as the weather gets warmer.
Where to wear Lori’s look: The beauty of Lori’s look is that it can be worn everywhere! You can wear it running errands, meeting a friend for lunch, or even date night.

Trend: Stripes
Model: Natalie
Why Stripes: Stripes may seem a bit obvious for spring, because they are always in style. But we’re already starting to hear the phrase “sailor-core” and stripes are a big part of that. In addition to classic stripes, stripes for 2025 will also be more bold and colorful and designed with unique angles. While they are a trend all on their own, they can also be combined with other trends. For example, a striped rugby shirt perfectly aligns with the sporty/preppy trend.
Natalie’s Look: Because of Natalie’s job, we wanted to find a striped look that would be good for the office. Pinstripes are a traditional business look, but the trend for this year is going to be more bold stripes. The gold button detailing is also one that is in style right now. For a more business look, we added the blazer and swapped out the self-belt that came with the dress for a solid black belt to add some interest and to cinch her waist. Since pink is Natalie’s signature color, we added the pink bag to accent her glasses. Adding a pop of color is a way to add some fun and personality to a business look.
Where to Wear Natalie’s Look: As mentioned, this is a great look for the office, but it can double as a day to night look as well. Open the collar, swap out the basic earrings for large hoops and add a dressy tall boot.

Trend: Asymmetrical Hemlines
Model: Rhonda
Why Asymmetrical: The trends for spring 2025 have been described as expressing joy and optimism. The asymmetrical trend is a look that allows for freedom and movement and flows with that description. It’s a look that can be styled in multiple ways such as asymmetrical hemlines in skirts, off-the-shoulder or angled neckline tops and even asymmetrical shirt hems in tops. These looks can run from day into night. You can pair an asymmetrical skirt with a cashmere sweater, a unique neckline top with faux leather pants or an asymmetrical sweater with jeans and sneakers.
Rhonda’s Look: Rhonda’s look actually combines two different trends for the season: asymmetrical and leopard.
Where to Wear Rhonda’s Look: Rhonda’s look can pretty much be worn anywhere – to the office, for brunch, parties, you name it.

How To Wear Four Fashion Trends Over 50: Fringe
Model: LeeAnn
Why Fringe: There’s a 70’s fashion revival going on and fringe appears to be at the forefront. What’s great about the fringe trend is that it’s one that can go from winter to spring along with the fact that there are both bold and subtle ways to incorporate it into your wardrobe. For right now, think heavier fabrics like suede and leather but come spring, you can combine fringe with raffia or swap out the dark colors and replace them with fringe pieces in this spring’s “it” color, pastel pink.. You can style it “all in” such as in a suede fringe jacket or knit coatigan or add just a touch with a fringe bag or belt. For spring, a fringe raffia tote will be the perfect piece.
LeeAnn’s Look: For LeeAnn’s look, and to match her personality, I wanted to go with more of a “fun and flirty” look with a bit of sophistication. It’s natural, when you think of fringe to think of more of a western look, such as fringe suede jackets or handbags. But fringe can be an elevated look for an evening out or even for work. It’s a new twist on a little black dress.
I intentionally kept this simple in a basic black intentionally. We kept her legs “bare” so that the fringe would be the star of the outfit. I wanted a monochrome look, again, to show off the fringe, but added some fun with her handbag.
Where to wear LeeAnn’s look: I love LeeAnn’s look for both a date night or evening out with the girls. Depending on where you work, this can also be a great work outfit, paired with a blazer. This works especially great is you are in a creative field.

How did I pick my look for the WGN segment?
I wanted to wear something that was also a trend for 2025, and for me, it was color. Pink is going to be “spring’s burgundy”. You’re going to see more pink in just a few months. I wanted to get a head start on it. We’re also still seeing the “ladylike” trend continue and I love the 60’s inspired look of this dress.
