What to Wear in January: Outfit Ideas for the Winter Style Slump

January Outfit Ideas

January is that in-between month where the excitement of holiday dressing has faded…and spring still feels very far away. It’s cold, it’s dark, and most of us feel stuck in a wardrobe rut. If you’ve been living in black sweaters for weeks, you’re not alone. This month, I’m sharing fresh outfit ideas—and a few simple color updates—to help you feel stylish again without buying an entirely new wardrobe.

My lavender sweater is from the Express Outlet (not sold online), but I did find a similar one at Uniqlo.  My mint green faux fur jacket is from Macy’s and is still available as of this writing.

This is the first post in my Winter-to-Spring Style Series, designed to help you look chic from now through March.

What’s Happening This Month (for Your Style)

January actually has more style “moments” than we realize. Here’s what many of us are dressing for:

  • Ski trips & winter getaways where comfort and warmth still need to feel polished
  • Ice festivals and outdoor winter events that require practical layers
  • Back-to-work after the holidays, calling for elevated basics—not boring basics
  • Indoor gatherings, where cozy textures shine

All of these moments create the perfect backdrop for refreshing your winter wardrobe—without defaulting to more black and grey.

Colors to Try This Month: Frosty Pastels and Winter White

If your closet feels dark and heavy this time of year, introducing lighter, winter-appropriate pastels can be a game-changer. They feel seasonal—cool, muted, and elegant—while still adding a fresh lift to your outfits. Keep scrolling for shoppable inspiration pieces in these colors.

Soft Ice Blue
A beautiful winter neutral that pairs effortlessly with grey, denim, white, taupe, or camel. It brightens your complexion and instantly softens cold-weather outfits.

Pale Lavender
Sophisticated, feminine, and surprisingly versatile. Try it with charcoal trousers, navy denim, or winter white for a modern, polished look.

Cool Mint
Clean and elegant. It looks stunning with taupe, ivory, camel, or even chocolate brown. A soft way to introduce color without feeling summery.

Winter White
A classic and a great way to lighten your winter wardrobe.  A monochrome winter white outfit is chic and still looks perfect as a winter outfit.  And you pair it with any color.

A simple pastel knit, scarf, bag or hat will break up your dark outerwear and make everything look more intentional.

If You Really Must Wear Black, Here’s How to Elevate It

I know…black isn’t going anywhere. It’s timeless, chic, and practical—especially in January. But if you want to avoid looking flat or washed out, here are a few ways to elevate black so it feels intentional rather than default:

Add a Soft Contrast Layer
Pair black with one of this month’s frosty pastels—ice blue, lavender, or winter mint. Even a scarf or sweater peeking out makes a dramatic difference.

Mix Textures or Add Details to Create Depth
Black looks more elevated when the textures vary. Try:

  • Wool + Satin
  • Cashmere + Leather
  • Chunky Knit + Sleek Denim

Texture = dimension, which keeps black from looking too harsh.

Also, add details such as contrasting trim, buttons or even lace to avoid a “plain black sweater”.

Incorporate a Non-Black Accessory
Swap your black boots or bag for brown, taupe, camel, or grey. This warms up the outfit instantly without sacrificing elegance.

Play With Proportion
Black looks chic when the silhouette does the talking:

  • Wide-leg pants
  • Oversized knits
  • Belted coats

Keep it simple, but let the shape shine.

Add Brightness Near Your Face
A pastel scarf, statement earring, or soft makeup (a touch of blush or a brighter lip) brightens your features so black doesn’t drain your complexion.

  • Add a pastel accessory to break up dark outerwear.
  • Layer a fitted turtleneck under a blazer or sweater dress for warmth and polish.
  • Mix textures: sherpa with denim, suede with knits, satin with wool.
